Rediscovering Joy: Why Play is Essential for Adult Wellbeing

In a world where we often feel pressured to be serious and productive all the time, play offers much needed balance. It reminds us to embrace our inner child, find joy in the simplest of things, and approach life with curiosity and enthusiasm.

I’ve recently become a grandparent for the 1st time and the joy of playing with a baby and seeing them smile and coo with joy has reminded me of how we can lose the simple joys in life as the routine of work and responsibilities takes over.

Play is not just for children it is key to a happy, healthy, and fulfilling adult life. It helps us embrace a sense of wonder, enhances our creativity and just let go and have some fun- surely that is important in our lives?

Let’s look at the importance of play, how it supports our wellbeing and then a few ideas to get you playing and having some fun.

  1. Stress Relief: Engaging in playful activities helps us let go of stress, worries, and responsibilities. It allows us to be fully present in the moment and helps our minds unwind. It activates the release of endorphins, which are natural mood boosters, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

  2. Cognitive Function: When we engage in activities that require creativity, and problem-solving, our brains receive a workout. Play helps improve memory, concentration, and overall mental agility. It also provides an outlet for self-expression, allowing us to explore our emotions and thoughts in a non-judgmental space.

  3. Physical Wellbeing: Playful activities often involve movement and physical exertion. Whether it's engaging in sports or dancing, play gets us up and active. Regular physical activity boosts cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles, and improves flexibility.

  4. Social Connections: Play provides opportunities for socialising and building meaningful connections. Engaging in team sports or games nights, fosters friendships, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. Play can help break down social barriers, encourage laughter, and create shared experiences that strengthen relationships.

  5. Emotional Wellbeing: Play taps into our emotions and allows us to experience joy, laughter, and spontaneity. It encourages positive emotions and a sense of welbeing. Playfulness promotes resilience, optimism, and a lighthearted approach to life's challenges. It offers an outlet for emotional expression and stress release, promoting overall emotional balance.

  6. Work-Life Balance: Incorporating play into our lives helps us maintain a healthy work-life balance. It reminds us to prioritise self-care, relaxation, and enjoyment. Playful activities provide a break from routine and recharge our energy, making us more productive and focused when we return to our tasks.

  7. Personal Growth and Creativity: Engaging in play allows us to explore new interests, discover hidden talents, and nurture our creativity. Playful experiences provide opportunities for personal growth, self-discovery, and continuous learning. Trying new activities and stepping out of our comfort zones through play can lead to personal fulfilment and a sense of achievement.

How can we unleash the inner child and bring play into our lives?

  1. Engage in hobbies: Find activities that you enjoy and pursue them regularly. Whether it's painting, playing an instrument, dancing, gardening, or any other hobby, immerse yourself in the joy of the process without worrying about the end result.

  2. Play sports or games: Join a sports team or gather friends for regular game nights. Engaging in physical activities and friendly competition can be both enjoyable and a great way to stay fit.

  5. Laugh and be silly: Surround yourself with people who have a great sense of humour and enjoy lighthearted moments. Watch comedies, tell jokes, and embrace laughter. Don't take yourself too seriously, allow yourself to be silly from time to time.

  6. Socialise and play with others: Organise social events that involve games, karaoke, or group activities. Playfulness can be amplified when shared with others. Engaging in cooperative or competitive activities with friends or loved ones can bring joy and connection.

  7. Engage in playful exercises: Incorporate playful elements into your exercise routine. Try activities like trampolining, hula hooping, or jumping rope. These activities can make workouts more enjoyable and fun.
